    anyone have any tips on soldering oxidised wire? old wiring in cars.. even cheap korean cars I find no matter much you try and solder a wire, the solder just beads off it and wont stick. I find this sometimes at work and its very frustrating. Must be the difference in the quality of copper used, some cars Ive had this happen to are 15 years old but yet some cars that are 25 years old dont have the issue. Strange. I have a decent weller/snapon butane gun with a decent tip so its not a heat issue.

      Try cleaning with rubbing alcohol first. Prep is very important, esp for those old oxidized wires. Crimp could be a better alternative if solder is not flowing well into the old wires.

      You can also try adding flux paste onto the wires first.

        I run into this regularly on motorcycles, particularly where oil wicks up the stator wires. I use a small stainless wire brush and the exposed wire like brushing hair. I hit it with a spray solvent and keep turning the wire over and brushing until it is clean and dry. Not as good as virgin wire, but i can get a solid solder joint.

          This is addicting.

          Another noob thing I did was just heat up the lug with mapp gas and
          filled it up with molten solder. Then just dipped the wire in.
          Seemed legit but I guess it's not how you do it.


          Bought this sweet crimping tool for $20!
          Again, just another noob wiring thing.
