Anyway to have the antenna up only for radio?

I have a stock radio and is there a way that the antenna will only go up when I am on radio? I mostly use the cassette adaptor for my iPod and don't want to have the antenna up when I do that...is it possible?

    Yes, easy too.

Get a window cutoff switch for an early ETA, the one that fits above the radio.

Use it on the white wire that runs the antenna...push it in, the antenna goes down and stays down until you push that button again, then it will work normally.

Absolutely, but I don't think it will fit the same spot.

Any normal "push on, push off" will do fine.

Any early e30 had them on the dash next to the hazard switch. M10 318's etc. the late models work fine, but the bezel surround is different so it looks out of place.

I think I have an early one at home. Pm me if you are interested.

^This. You can actually find a lot of switches that will fit in one of the spots above the stereo. I was looking for a fog light switch but found this swann Australian switch while digging

                  Looks super stock when installed!

But seriously, get one of these switches

Sorry for the ugly appearance/rust its the first one I found. I used to have a bunch. Its a little depressed these days, need to clean it out.

I never used the balance knob or the window cut-off switch, so there's two empty spots you can use one for your antenna control. I actually did this exact same mod. I did it when I replaced my antenna so I wired it in directly.
West German BMWs, they just don't make the same as they did before the wall fell.
^Case in point: Auto-Repair Technology. Everytime my car isn't starting or acting up I let it sit, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for days. But it eventually fixes itself.

that yellow switch is hideous. get a fog light switch. now, if you have the BMW premium sound system you will need to run a separate wire to the antenna. The radio's single trigger wire turns the amp on and makes the antenna go up.

Interesting, I guess this is another item that my PO's stereo installer did right.

My antenna goes up only when radio is the selected source, apparently that isn't the stock operation?

True but incorrect. There are 2 white wires in the dash: 1 for antenna and 1 for amp remote

Your deck is aftermarket, many have dedicated power antenna outputs, for just that reason.
