Does anyone take factory stereos and gut them ?

I hate the way the new HU look, I want to keep my old school E30 HU, but I need things like RCAs, aux input, bluetooth, ect...

does anyone gut oldskool HU's and update them, keeping same box and face ?

if not someone should. these new radios look horrible, even the alpines. i dont drive nissan maxima's for a reason. id rather not have there fugly stereo either...

A guy local to me does that.
I saw a 63 vette stock radio he gutted for a show car, and installed a modern Alpine chassis to the old face plate, complete with IR remote control.

Contact info? What does he charge?

I have a few non-working stock radios and I would love a stock appearing dash.

It's all custom work, so it's not cheap.

There are a couple of people in the Miata community that do this for Mazda factory radios...refurbish the displays, add circuits for iPod compatibilty, etc. It is Miata specific, but the people that go that route seem happy with it. Probably not relevant to your case, but with some homework and a spare unit, you may be able to do something similar yourself.
