m52b28 - oil service/inspection light & engine oil check light

Two problems really, but maybe they're related?

Firstly, I am unable to reset the oil service/inspection gauge. I followed the guide about using a jumper wire to short the two pins on the big "pac-man" looking connector for 10 seconds... but I can't get it to reset.

Secondly, on the overhead check panel, the Engine Oil light is on. The oil level on the dipstick was slightly below the line, so I added about a half quart, but the light on the check panel is still on after starting the engine about a dozen times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about eh service indicator reset, but I know the wiring for the oil level sensor has been shown incorrect on several diagrams. If the two wires are backwards, the car will think the engine has no oil instead of being full. Should be pins 1 and 2 on the X20 I believe.

For the service reset, I would first identify if the SI board batteries have been changed. When these batteries die, a common problem is the oil or inspection lights cannot be reset.

So assuming you did the wiring correctly, the problem could be dead SI board batteries if they have never been changed before.

Thanks, I will check the batteries that's probably what it needs.

As for the engine oil check light, I discovered that whoever did the swap (PO paid a shop to do it) never bothered to hook up the oil level sensor on the oil pan. So that explains that problem.

I have a question though... is there any way to tell which SI board batteries I need before I take the cluster out? I would rather have the batteries ordered before I take everything apart.

I see that some cars have AA sized rechargeables while others have shorter, fatter rechargeables.
