    Keyless entry...

Anyone installed one of these??.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

The most appealing part (to me) is the combined remote and key....like the VW remotes

It's it worth the extra money??

Yeah, I wouldnt mind the flip key for simplicity but only if that stuff was up to snuff of the quality of what I have now.

Im thinking of trying to figure out how to graft my metal blank into one of the new DEI controls. The control is pretty ergonomic and then it would be like the modern BMW keys but a little bigger. Then I would have less in my pocket and nothing bouncing against the collumn.
        Im now E30less.

Call me crazy, but in an old car like the E30, I think it's appropriate to NOT have keyless entry.

Far from it, I have the same keys and they are nicely made, sure its not 100% bmw quality, but overall its much better then a seperate keyfob.

are you crazy? clicking a button and having all your doors unlock beats the hell out of fiddling around in the dark for your keys, scratching the shit out of your paint and dealing with frozen locks. it also saves wear and tear on your lock cylinders and key. who cares how old the car is?

                1. Ignition smart/anti-hijack = gay unless you live in South Africa. You have to "bleep" the alarm to open the door with the engine running.

                2. Re-arm = gay - unless the system has an ingition loop antennae that can sense when the keys are in the car, otherwise you will be constantly locking your keys inside.

                3. Starter immobilisation only = gay - where is ignition disable, spark disable and fuel disable? Minimum dual immobilisers IMO. Where is the auto-immobilise? Does it have antennae loop to auto-disarm immobilisers when key is in the car?

Buy a decent aftermarket alarm from a decent distributor. Pay for a PROPER install (a GOOD install is more important that a good alarm) and put up with the key fob.

Oh, and DaveInLA - duuuude! WTF? keyless entry is awesome. Hell I'd put it in my Dixi if I had one.

No why did you say that? My advice is based on experience and a good grounding in what makes a good car alarm. Anti hijack feature is annoying, re-arm is likely to get you locked out, immobilisation is only worthwhile if it is dual or more and auto arm-rearm (of immobiliser only - not alarm) by key-fob sensor (not manual press of button) and a crap alarm installed well will do a much better job than a good alarm installed poorly.

I based these comments on the features of the alarm in question as advertised on eBay - if you didn't know what I was talking about, perhaps you should read the auction before making dumbarse comments.

Keyless entry is awesome - the Dixi is the first BMW ever made (Essentially an Austin 7 produced by BMW under license from Austin) - the comment was meant to indicate that vehicle age should have no preclusion over proper vehicle protection or the convenience of keyless entry.

And it's 3pm Tuesday afternoon over here so if I had had too much to drink I think my boss would have something to say about that.

In these parts, it doesn't get that cold. As for the dark, well, my key has a lightbulb.

An analogy for the "old" thing is airbags on the steering wheel. If you could upgrade your cool 3-spoke steering wheel for a newer bloated airbag one, would you? It's safer, more modern, etc., etc., but on a sentimental level, it doesn't belong on this car. It's just how I feel.

My e30 came from the factory with BMW alarm/keyless entry and SRS. Should I take them out?

jj- I don't think the e30 pre-dates the above features.

I love my keyless entry. Easily one of my favorite mods done to my car, right after the carputer and screens in the headrests.

But seriously, I do love my keyless entry, and generally I hate electronics in cars.

Keyless entry doesn't look ugly like an airbag steering wheel, you can't see it. Plus when you get to your car it's already unlocked! It's great all the time but especially when it's raining (you get rain in LA right?) or when you're carrying lots of stuff.
