but that Denonford deck your looking at is an amazing unit a few of my friends had them they sound amazing and the lack of all the extras is really nice.

I was looking at the one right below the 8250. The 8250 (which you mentioned) has the dual 20-bit D/As. I'm looking at getting the 8240 (which has the 1 bit D/A). The 8240 can be had for about $150 or so on eBay new.

A friend and I are going to try to get my a/d/s/ PQ10.2 working again so that I can run a set of components off of it. I'm going to try to get an a/d/s/ AX2 active crossover for it too (since it doesn't have one built in).

I'm also thinking about getting a 3" midrange driver to match with my 6.5" and 1". But that seems like a lot of effort to try to find a good active 3 way crossover. Or I might try to find an a/d/s/ 6-channel amp with a built in crossover for them (are th built in active crossovers usually pretty decent?).

the built-in crossovers in the poweplates are great but tend to fail (buddy of mine has had to have in for service due to failed crossover modules 3 times now)

why do you want to run fully active?... do you have a real reason? building your own passive crossover is both very easy and semi-inexpensive

i dont think i would invest in the 3" drivers to add to the system... it wont make a huge difference... getting some mid-bass up front on the other hand will make a world of difference

The big advantage of the active crossover is the ability to adjust them. And aren't the crossover points much more precise due to the way that they actually inhibit the certain frequencies?

I have built my own passive crossovers before. I had a thread about it in the ICE forum, and a write-up.
Here is the picture of the finished product:

However, I've been having some trouble with the low frequencies and the bass response while using the crossover (which I'm currently not). I think the inductors may be causing EMF between eachother. The two ones on the right are for the mids. I've also been told that there may be a very large impedence drop near the xover frequency and that may be causing the distortion (read: very bad low bass response, woofers are 'popping').
So I'll be taking the whole thing apart and building two or four small ones perhaps.

When you say 'midbass' are you referring to a 7 or 8" driver? I've got some nice 6.5" MB Quart Mid ranges in the rear deck that I want to bring to the front (but I have to build some sort of pod first).

Is there any reason not to go fully active crossovers?

I want to make some sort of map-pocket pod for some 6.5" midbass drivers. Would a 4" midrange to match not even be worth it?
