    Fried my speakers?

So my front passenger side speakers (components, so both kick panel and tweeter) started acting funny about a week ago. The tweeter started crackling, but at first i thought it was just the tweeter pod itself rattling with because of the bass in the car (I have a 12 inch luck box bumping) which was not the case. Later I realized the tweeter was crackling when the volume was high, at first, then it started crackling at lower volumes. I couldn't really hear much different from the kick panel speaker. Well, soon after, both speakers quit all together. strangely they would come in and out, mostly out. But if they were working the tweeter would crackle.

My system is powered by a planet audio 1800 watt amp.

Long story short, i took the equipment out and ... :

What happened? are my crossover/speakers fried? I do push the system pretty hard, but i have it calibrated so i don't push the speakers past their clarity zone. Is this possibly water damage? the crossover was sitting down below the speaker in the empty space behind the fender. None of my other speakers are having trouble.

    Any advice?

Tweeters are most susceptible to damage compared to other speakers. I'm hardly an expert on this subject, but the crackling you heard was likely clipping and your tweeters are now dead.

That is definitely corrosion, but it is unlikely it did any damage. Take the cover off the crossover and see what it looks like. If there is a bunch of corrosion there, that might be your problem.

Try either another speaker or test these speakers with another source. Basically find out if the speaker is bad or if it isn't receiving a signal.

Oh man... This is exactly why I tell people to never put crossovers in that cubby. Most likely the amp blew a channel and took out your tweeter.

Go connect the other speaker to that channel after disconnecting all the others. Turn on the stereo and listen quietly, see if all the channels play properly first.

I think he is assuming you put the crossover behind the speaker in the foot well.

O shit so this could mean my amp is shot too?

What is wrong with putting the crossover in that spot?

I don't think there is any spare room up there. I ended up with my passenger side crossover attached to the underside of the glove box. It's low profile enough that you can only see it if you stick your head down there.

I usually want to display the crossovers, so generally I put them in the trunk. Of course that means running tweeter and midrange wires, so it's a big pain in the butt.

Alternatively, If you put them higher up in the dash, you only need to extend the wires a couple of feet.

Either way, make sure they stay dry!

Yea I screwed that up. I didn't realize it got wet in that cubby. The po had the crossovers in that spot too

Bummer! Test the amp carefully, the wet crossover may have roasted a channel. It will kill whatever you put in, so test carefully

Oh, fix your floor drainage issue too. The tubes that run out of there get clogged or crushed with a careless floor jack
