3rd Alternator. Battery light dead. SOS

    Hey guys

I am on my 3rd alternator now. Same story each time. Pretty damn sure its not the problem with the alternator now. Something is causing them to go bad.

To make a long story short.

-battery has been tested twice and is good. I have checked grounds all around car. I don't have a specific ground for alternator but I assume its just grounded through contact?

-Alternators are bosch refurbished 80amp from O'reillys. The last one I got I even checked in store to make sure it tested good beforei put it in car.

-Car doesn't have any new unusual drain. I have added 2 gauges for the turbo.

-1991 318is m50 obdi swap - now turbo. Car ran fine m50 N/A. all this started after I dropped engine during turbo build.

    1. My battery light doesn't work. Its never on. Not on during any position of key or when alternator works or doesn't or when battery is full or drained. Can someone please clarify the significance of this light/exciter and how to fix it and if its necessary for charging on a 91 318is (m50 swap). I don't believe it has ever worked and a couple months ago before I dropped the engine for turbo goodies all of a sudden this. Before the alternator and everything worked fine with the m50.

    2. Very slight buzzing can be heard from alternator area when key is in ignition. When car is on, random chatter and noise come from alternator. ABS light randomly comes on. When I drive the car, it wants to stall in between shifts. Eventually battery runs completely out of juice and I end up being jumpstarted to auto zone for another test. This is round #3.

I have read about all kinds of alternator troubleshooting but I am not sure on how to approach or tackle this situation where something keeps killign my alternators.

    Thanks for the time

Switched battery light even though it didn't seem burnt out. Bttery light now works. Got alternator checked. No more noise. And it IS charging. everything passed. Car still wants to stall during shifts and when it tries to recover idle bounces all over the place. Thought it could be Air temp sensor so I checked for pinches and its getting current just fine. Any ideas?

So your alternator is fine now? but your idle is all over the place? Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Check your alt ground and body to frame ground wire.
