Take a look here.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ALPINE-7907-CD-T...QQcmdZViewItem
Didn't really have a need or a reason for buying this, but I am a sucker for older, high quality electronics that I remember lusting for when I had no money years ago. Anyway, for those of you too young to remember, the Alpine 7907 was the first head unit with 4 volt outputs way before anyone else. It's big brother, the Alpine 7909, was considered to be one of (if not THE) finest and best sounding CD head units ever made. The 7907 is very similar in looks and overall sound quality, but has a few less of the high-end features.
The Soundstream D200 is from the late-'80's, and is considered to be one of the best sounding car amplifiers made. This was when Soundstream made high quality gear, not the stuff that always went up in smoke that was made in the mid-'90's. As a matter of fact, the D200 was designed by Nelson Pass, one of the most respected designers of very high-end home audio amplifiers.
As far as the Alpine EQ/crossover-meh. Nothing special about it besides the fact they worked well. It just happened to be part of the package.
Most would probably wonder why I would buy such old equipment. True, I myself would like MP3 capability, but overall I think it would be cool to have period-correct equipment in my '88 M3. Somehow, I will use the Alpine 7907 with either this Soundstream or my beloved a/d/s/ PH15 I have owned for 14 years. If the Alpine works properly, I will probably change the illumination to amber to better match the dash-or heck I might leave it as is. I love the vintage looks of the original Alpine head units.
Now if I could just find a mint condition pair of a/d/s/ 320is component speakers to complete the package.....
