    Crackling sound when changing volume?

So, I'm looking into taking the E30 to a local stereo shop to see if they can fix my stereo, but I'm having trouble figuring out what the problem that I have. I don't know if it's my head unit or if it's something wrong with the wires.

The head unit itself works fine. I can change the source fine, the usb works, the aux works, and the radio works fine too. But when I change the volume up around half max volume, my speakers start making a weird crackling noise. I don't think they're blown, since they worked fine before I took it to my mechanic to sort out an electrical short caused by a bad wiring harness and botched wiring by the PO.

And if I even increase it past half max volume, my speakers just stop playing entirely. What I do know is that the PO did a botched install and wired the power to the head unit to the headlight switch and fucked up the entire interior harness behind the dash. The harness has since been replaced, as well as the headlight switch. According to my mechanic if I remember correctly, there was a short to ground caused by the head unit being wired to the lights.

    Any advice?

Mine's a 91 325i vert. This was the aftermarket stereo that came with it. The PO had a different stereo in it before, but took it out and installed this cheapo, Pioneer head. I rather like it, especially with the USB outlet. I just hope it can still be used without a problem and can be fixed.

      It's a Pioneer MVH-X171UI.

OK, so if its a 91 Vert, it is highly likely that it is Premium Sound, meaning a small 4 channel amp in the trunk.

Your best bet by far is to bypass the amp following the instructions in the tutorial in my sig. The stock amp is a complete turd, your el-cheap-o Pioneer has more power and better SQ...so bypass the stock amp and all should be great.
