Immediate, full volume buzz when radio turned on.

So this started pretty recently, no idea why.

    1991 318is completely stock radio/wiring etc.

When the stereo is turned on, it just buzzes at full volume. Does not matter what button is pressed. My son describes it as 'a really loud fart'.

Ideas? I don't want to replace the head unit but im leaning towards it (Bluetooth) at this point.

Does it change or crackle when you turn the volume knob?

        OK - more research...

Turns out if I crank the volume to.max, you can hear music. Also when adjusting the fader/balance, nothing changes. Gotta be the head unit.

All I want is a basic head unit with an aux input in the rear that does not look like a spaceship.

sounds like the headunit is toast.

Unplug the head unit but power the amp by probing 12V to the white wire. This will turn on the factory amp with the deck off. If the noise goes away, deck is bad. If the noise remains, amp is bad.

Keep in mind a shorted speaker wire or dead speaker can also cause this problem. Keep that in mind when troubleshooting. If they are recently installed speakers or original speakers, that is your most likely scenario.
