    Stomp test verification

I did the stomp test on my 91 318i and it looks like it works well and all, I actually got a 1444 code which is a good thing. But, from what I have seen online the light that is supposed to blink is the check engine light, on mine the green light with the arrows is the one that blinks to give out the code. My question is, is the green light with the arrows supposed to blink or is my gauge cluster modified or just tweaking out?.... I have a picture here to show the light that blinks for the stomp test on my car. (not a picture of my gauge cluster).

Sorry for the noob question but I'm just wondering about this light situation.

Not my gauge cluster, but the light that blinks in my car is the one that the arrow is pointing to in the picture.

check engine light is supposed to blink. weird issue you're having!! I don't even know what that green light is supposed to do, lol

does the CEL light illuminate when the key is first turned to the ignition on position, before starting the car?

      ^^^^

The CEL light does illuminate when I turn the key to acc and it turns off when I turn the car on, it is so weird haha. I looked online to try and find out what the green light is and it seems like no one really knows what it is for. Im uploading a video to youtube to show what I'm talking about, ill post a link when it's up.

Did someone just plug it into the wrong position? If the cluster was ever taken out it would be easy enough to do if they weren't paying attention. On my 89, my CEL is a separate cable with the light that just slides into the open slot on the back of the gauge cluster. There are two cables like this, one is for the cel and the other is for the abs or something else on the right portion of the gauge cluster, I don't recall off hand. I have the green arrows on mine also, but they don't illuminate.

Oh that makes sense, thanks kid8. The previous owner swaped the original cracked dash for a clean one with no cracks, that would explain why the lights were switched by accident. By looking at the other lights on the cluster and from what you said, it leads me to believe that the cable on the CEL is for the anti lock. Now, how easy is the cluster to remove?

It' pretty straight forward. Just remove some trim pieces and screws. Removing the steering wheel makes life easier too. If you search, there are a few different tutorials.

I never remove the steering wheel. Plenty of space.

I installed a quick release steering wheel not long ago, removing the wheel is fairly easy now. Im gonna go look for those tutorials. Thanks guys for the help, this forum is awesome.

The green arrows are for cars with a factory trailer hitch and wiring. It flashes with the turn signals when a trailer is plugged in.
