    Service light

Hey guys, oil service and inspection light along with the yellow light have been on ever since I purchased the car several months ago. Used the wire method to reset. Three of the five green lights lit up and then went off. The inspection light will not go off though. Is this a sign of bad batteries on the board?

    Thanks

to make the inspection go off you have to leave the wire connected for a few seconds longer than for the oil lights. It's weird that only three green lights came back on though. Maybe that's related to the inspection light

I left the wire connected for about a minute and the inspection light never went off. The oil service light went off after about two or three seconds. The inspection light never did. I'm just thinking bad batteries on the si board. On a side note. Is there any way to tell which kind of batteries your board has without taking the cluster out of the car first?

I have the cheap ebay tool that makes this easier. Worked on my US spec cluster. Now I have a euro cluster and it wont turn the service light off

If your service lights will not reset, the SI board batteries are dead.

You cannot tell which batteries are equipped on the board without disassemblying the cluster unfortunately. If you want to learn more about the Si board, read the technical articles page at our website.

I believe 86+ has the newer lithium batteries, whereas 84-85 has the nicds which fail and leak. If you have three red service lights you most likely have the nicd batts. But it's best to take it apart and see. Popping the cluster out isn't hard, but make sure you memorize how it came out because putting it back in can be tricky and misleading

Do you have a momo meter cluster? My '87 with a VDO has lithium batteries

Then my cluster must have been refurbished at one point. Which explains why my odo works...
