    Speedometer issues

Speedometer quit working in my 87 327i and can't seem to sort out why. Switched the speed sensor, traced the wiring, hooked a multimeter into the harness right before the cluster and get ~8hz when idling in 1st gear and will steadily climb as throttle is applied.

Tried 3 different cluster that all worked previously and all of them work...except for the speedo.

Tore everything apart in 2 of the clusters (1 motometer and 1 vdo) and couldn't find any bad connection or anywhere that needed solder to be flowed. Have looked through many other threads but still kinda stumped.

I'm having issues with mine as well. I think it may be a wiring issue on the car not in the cluster.

        Speedometer issues

Forgot i had yet another cluster in my other project car. Going to try that and see what happens...maybe 3rd cluster is the charm?

Also this problem only started after I had to jump the harness to get the tach to work. Wouldnt think there would be any relation as the wiring is completely independent of each other but though I'd mention it. Gotta be something because of the cluster removal?

New cluster resolved the speedo issue but of course the odometer gears are stripped. Guess its time to test if it was the cluster pcb or the speedo pcb and switch some things around. Small victories!

I just had a problem on my 85 323i project car where the battery bulb wasn't making good enough contact and measured open. On early cars, there's no bypass resistor so if the bulb isn't good or passes current, the car doesn't charge. I checked the bulb before and it was good but I didn't measure for continuity. This relates to your issue as well as the that trace also supplies power to the speedo. If you have a 86 on cluster then you have a bypass resistor. If someone changed your cluster to an early style then you don't. Anyway, follow the trace from the battery bulb.

All my clusters are late model with coding plugs. Thanks for the input though!
