I am trying to trouble shoot a non working temp gauge issue in my 89 325i. The gauge is not completely dead as the needle moves slightly when you turn the ignition on from off position to just below the blue but never gets above that when driving.
I suspect it could be the SI board batteries but want to make sure that the cluster is getting the proper signal before buying a replacement. Can anyone tell me what wire in the blue, white, or yellow cluster connectors I should test for continuity between the brown single pin temp sensor connector and the cluster connection. I want to make sure the wire is not faulty.
I have already tried to test the gauge by grounding out that signal wire to see if it would peg the gauge all the way to hot but nothing happens. Everything else functions in the cluster as it should and I can even reset the SI lights so I am doubting the need to replace the board or batteries.
I suppose that the cluster board could have bad solder joints too, but need to verify the cluster is getting a signal before delving into that. Read another thread that said the signal wire for the temp gauge is in the blue connector and is the brown violet wire but when I tested for continuity from that pin in the connector to the pin in the temp sensor connector I got nothing. If this is the right wire then I found my problem. If it isn't then that is the reason I do not have continuity. A wire diagram would be useful!
Any help would be much appreciated. TIA!
