OEM Head Unit Reinstalled... Not Taking Code?

I'm going retro with my '88 M3 and reinstalling the OEM CM5907 (Alpine) cassette/radio head. I've re-connected everything to the OEM fader switch and the OEM Blaupunkt amp (trunk-mounted... what a PITA to get at!). The fuses in the amp and the radio looked fine when I reinstalled/reconnected.

It's not accepting the code that I confirmed at the dealer.

I've performed the "wait-an-hour-then-3-more-attempts" as well as disconnecting/reconnecting battery.

    Suggestions?

Was the code from the dealer based on the VIN that the radio was originally installed in ?

It was based on the Serial # on the radio. I watched as he went into the Alpine website via their dealer Extranet portal: Aftersale service->Aftersales service main->Alpine Radio Codes. It only asked him for the model number (in this case CM5907) and the serial number (in this case 10 characters A########A).

      It returned 15423.

He's also sent a PuMA request in... I guess that's some sort of personalized technical support request often used by the dealer mechanics when working on the "older cars".

Leave the car with the key in the 2nd position for 1/2 an hour before entering the code. Yeah it sucks, but this is how it's done.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.
