If the original E30 HU has fader control built in, (there is no external switch) is it safe to think that the amp is a 4 input piece as opposed to the 2 input amp with an external fader control?

Is there any utility in upgrading the amp, wiring that up properly if needed, and using an OEM head unit with built in fader control?

So you must have a very late-model E30.

Yes, any upgrade to the amp would be a good idea, sonically. Stock amps in those days were weak-sauce.

Not sure, but it looks like the E30's went to 4 channel in 1990 and never looked back. It seems like if you had a 4 channel set-up, sequential upgrades would be amp, hu, then speakers with a crossover?
