If you were to build a custom bandpass box you could run the ports for it through your back seat. You may not need to make any holes larger than 4” in diameter, and if you are worried about strength you can weld in some reinforcement. I have personally tested a bandpass box with one JL 12w3v2 with 300 watts powering it, that was louder than two JL 12w6 in a sealed box with 1000w powering it. All this was in the same car and all SPL results were metered using an RTA and SPL microphone. You have to make it custom though. There are very few commercially available boxes that are designed correctly. If done correctly a box with two 12” and over 1000 watts should easily exceed 135db even in an open air environment like a convertible.

All true except for the fact that very few woofers sold today are even remotely happy in a bandpass.

I hit 142 out of a single JBL GTi1200 woofer in a 4 cubic foot (total) bandpass using a Fosgate 150HD amp...absolutely violent bass, and fucking clean too. Not many woofers out there now have a Qts lower than .3, so it is tough.

My plan for cabrio woofers involves 2 sealed 12" Fi X subs in the back, I'll probably just take the seat out and make a box to fit there.

While I certainly think the toolkit is rattling as well, I've got a 1000w monoblock powering two 12" JBLs and they're certainly rattling anything and everything that's not bunkered down. I bought some 'Peel & Seal' and starting taking out the carpeting in the trunk. My biggest rattle seems to come from directly behind the license plate. Just a thin sheet of metal there. I've started to line the rear of the trunk and the trunklid. It already has reduced rattling a touch and improved response. I plan on doing more this Friday. I'm hoping to layer the entire trunk (top, bottom, sides, back) with 2-3 layers of insulation.

Stereo Installer, your rear looks nice (take that for what it is ). I wouldn't mind doing something like that to port into the cabin. Are those ported into your box or just the trunk? I unfortunately do not have a backseat with an armrest like yourself. I punched out the skipass and dug out the padding in the center of the rear seat. The bass is still quite muffled because of all the padding and the sheetmetal. I have some serious kick in the cabin but I know there is so much more to be had and with a much cleaner hit. I would think porting into the trunk alone and facin the subs toward the rear (once fully insulated) will improve the sound twofold.

Great discussion in this thread....now I'll post a question, has anyone thought of putting the sub anywhere but the rear? Say kickpanel or center console? I know there isn't alot of room. Quite honestly I'm in the process of just tearing apart my vert for the rebuild...is there anywhere else in the car that one could "fit" a decent size sub? 8" 10"?

Good idea about "slim" woofers under the seats. I am gonna measure today how much space is there.

How about putting the heater box in the trunk and a sub in the center of the dash?

Woofers under seats won't work. When seat was lowered, I could not even stick my palm vertically in there.

Maybe build a custom box using slim sub for passenger foot well. Either semi-flat on the floor or vertically against center console. Here are some pics (not e30s).

Do you think that might work? I could give it a try...

I have done that (^) in a couple of Miatas.

Not too bad, but I would never own a car with sound like that.

I suppose I am kind of an extremist, though. I either want to hear the damn music, or just the motor. If I had a cabby, I would pull the back seat and build subwoofer/amp rack, leaving the trunk 100% unmolested.

You won't be able to have anyone over 5' in your passenger side...
