If you were to build a custom bandpass box you could run the ports for it through your back seat. You may not need to make any holes larger than 4” in diameter, and if you are worried about strength you can weld in some reinforcement. I have personally tested a bandpass box with one JL 12w3v2 with 300 watts powering it, that was louder than two JL 12w6 in a sealed box with 1000w powering it. All this was in the same car and all SPL results were metered using an RTA and SPL microphone. You have to make it custom though. There are very few commercially available boxes that are designed correctly. If done correctly a box with two 12” and over 1000 watts should easily exceed 135db even in an open air environment like a convertible.

I hit 142 out of a single JBL GTi1200 woofer in a 4 cubic foot (total) bandpass using a Fosgate 150HD amp...absolutely violent bass, and fucking clean too. Not many woofers out there now have a Qts lower than .3, so it is tough.

Stereo Installer, your rear looks nice (take that for what it is). I wouldn't mind doing something like that to port into the cabin. Are those ported into your box or just the trunk? I unfortunately do not have a backseat with an armrest like yourself. I punched out the skipass and dug out the padding in the center of the rear seat. The bass is still quite muffled because of all the padding and the sheetmetal. I have some serious kick in the cabin but I know there is so much more to be had and with a much cleaner hit. I would think porting into the trunk alone and facin the subs toward the rear (once fully insulated) will improve the sound twofold.

Great discussion in this thread....now I'll post a question, has anyone thought of putting the sub anywhere but the rear? Say kickpanel or center console? I know there isn't alot of room. Quite honestly I'm in the process of just tearing apart my vert for the rebuild...is there anywhere else in the car that one could "fit" a decent size sub? 8" 10"?BMWCCA #389756

I have done that (^) in a couple of Miatas.
Not too bad, but I would never own a car with sound like that.
I suppose I am kind of an extremist, though. I either want to hear the damn music, or just the motor. If I had a cabby, I would pull the back seat and build subwoofer/amp rack, leaving the trunk 100% unmolested.
