Have you used one of the Pioneer 8" shallow mounts? I have it free-air at the moment and it adds a nice amount of depth to the otherwise lacking 5 1/4" components up front. I wouldn't describe it as a POS. Maybe not a jack hammer, but I'm looking for SQ not dB.

Installed my amp rack and components over the weekend. I went with an older set of Alpine SPX-137a, as I had the 173s in a previous car. They sound nice, but don't handle the lows anywhere near as nice as the 6.5", big surprise.

Yeah, I have done 4 or 5 of them. Poor power handling, very poor SQ, just a muddy thump if that. I get 10000X better bass out of a $50 woofer in one of my 8" boxes. At least in an infinite baffle install they should play fairly low, right? Just that little bit of bottom if that is all you are looking for, but certainly nothing you are ever gonna feel.

I've learned that it's best to just do what Luke says. He's never steered me wrong.

However, since I have an auto top vert one of your boxes isn't an option... So, I'm looking for info on shallow subs. I hadn't seen any posts from you previously on the Pioneer shallow, so I wasn't sure if you had made a custom box to its specs and determined it was crap, or if you had simply heard someone else's crappy box, thus determining that the Pioneer was crap(if you catch my meaning).

Yes, in infinite baffle it plays very low, but not very tight. I was hoping that a small slot ported box might help with that, and still tuck nicley under the carpet. It certainly adds a TON of depth to the soundstage the way it is, and it hits a little but is not a monster by any means. For $50 it seemed like a decent value, since I need shallow.

Again, thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated.

If my front sub doesn't do the trick, I'll consider the 13 hour drive, since I have family in the SEA-TAC area, but there is no way I could leave it for 2 weeks. 1 at the best.

I've not been around long enough here to know about the old thread, but fair enough.

I guess we'll see how this goes, and then if I don't like it make a trip up in the spring.

Finished up my front mounted subwoofer this weekend. I started by pulling back the carpet and removing the big ass foam block under the passenger footwell. I then used some second skin dampening product, followed by some 1/8" foam isolating material.

Over the top of the foam, I taped and foiled the area and laid up about 3-4 layers of polyester resin and thin choped mat until it was rigid enough to pull out and work on it out of the car. I was able to get about .4 cubic feet (plus the woofer) of air space into a
box ever so slightly larger than the foam block.

Nope. The max excursion of the woofer is very shallow. I've got over an extra .5" between the surface of the woofer and the "grill." They are there just to keep a "well positioned" foot from putting too much pressure on the carpet in the "right" place.
