Speakers cut in and out, connections are fine?

Please keep in mind this is a stock E36, non-HK system.

My stereo system is 100% stock except for the Nakamichi CD-45z headunit. The symptoms are, the rear speakers crackle in and out once in a while and sound like they are blown when they crackle, but they are not blown. It usually happens when you hit a bump or something. Also, once in a while when I hit a bump the right side speakers will turn off but if I mess with the volume a bit on the head unit, they will jump back on.

I've check all the wiring from the head unit to the stock speaker wiring, as well as all the connections from the stock wiring to the speakers as well as the connections at the amp in the trunk, and nothing was wrong.

This leaves me with either a faulty head unit or a stock amp that is failing. Which is more likely or common? Should I go ahead and try replacing the stock amp?

I'd test the stock amp first. Perhaps try and find a used one to swap in.

I think your headunit is toast. You should trash that Nakamichi and get something else. But that's just me. Make sure you carefully wrap it in bubblewrap or some foam packets as you do and notify me of the location of such trash bin.

How do you test it? There is one for sale on BFC for $10 right now so I think I'll just pick that up.
