Your mission: $500 budget stereo install

OK, I'm hoping your collective brain powerz can help me out with this. As the title implies. I've set a max limit of $500 (or less).

    Here's what I'm looking for:
-CD player head unit with front (or rear) AUX input. Bonus would be an iPod input and functions (ala Alpine).
-Front component speakers in the stock locations. I do have the tweeter sails
-Rear speakers in the stock locations.
-I don't think I'll need an amp, but it couldn't hurt. If you can build me a quality system in the budget with an amp, I'm all ears.

I'm not going to compete with this (duh!), but I'd like something a little better than what I have. Which a Sony CDX-M800 and some off brand speakers. It works....just not very well.

Musical types: pretty much everything but country.

    thanks!

Stock premium sound system with a high end head unit, maybe a nice 4 channel amp if there's $$$ left over. Wire around the factory fader, and run all new wires to all speakers.

By stock premium sound, are you referring to the speaker? I don't have the premium sound in my car now. So, re-wiring around the fader won't be an issue. Any feeling on a decent head unit. Or will anything from Best Buy be fine for my needs?

You should be able to find both front and rear "Premium Sound" speakers on this forum for under $150 shipped. Spend $110 on the Pioneer DEH2900 at WalMart. Buy a SVC 10" sub, build a box, (I will provide EXACT measurements...if you have skills, you can do it.) and I will sell you a solid 280watt RMS sub amp for $150 shipped.

your car will sound great for under $500.

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of detail I'm looking for.

Thanks for the recommendation on the head unit. Would the 'premium speakers' be OK w/o a amp/sub? I'm not much of a bass guy. I just like good clean music. Could I get away with the premium speakers and a decent four channel amp from you?

          thanks! keep the suggestions coming

Luke- Would you pick the Pioneer DEH-2900 over the Panasonic CQ-C3305U?

If the Panasonic has high pass filters, go for it.

EDIT: The Pansonic does not have high pass filters. No go!

I would go with a rebuilt or new pioneer on ebay from one of the many companies that sell them.

I bought a 3400 like 6 years ago, still works great to this day. Bought a DEH-P960MP probably 3 years ago for $300 ($600 at circuit city, etc..), still works great (minus one problem which was related to that model, and I was able to fix).

Both from ebay, from one of the companies with like 8000 positive feedback that sells stereo equipment, there's a shit load of them.

You can get an amp through them as well, or support our local stereo guru ^^^

In the event I can't find a decent set of premium speakers, are there a reasonable set of components (for the front) and coax (for the rear) you would recommend?

You can find premium speakers. Just wait for them to come up on ebay or post a WTB ad here and on e30tech. There's is plenty to go around. It will only take a week or two to find them. For the money you want to spend, you will only get shit that's not even as good as factory stuff, and then you have to deal with fitting the aftermarket tweeters in the factory pods, and shallow front speaker mounting depth.

In my 325e, I have Polk db coax fronts and pioneer 6x9 3 way rears, with a pioneer deh-p960mp head unit (top of the line, 9 band EQ). It sounds like shit compared to my stock 325is premium sound with a tape deck (which I have since removed). and it's not my tuning, I played with it for years, got it as good as it's gonna get for rock music, still had no mid range and a horrible front sound stage (probably due to the lack of pillar tweeters).

Gotcha, I started a wtb thread on here. guess I'll try over at e30tech, as well.

                            Will, I might take that.

                            Get a model number!

The USB adapter works too, about $100 from several sources.

                              dude, I'm first in-line ....lol
Been doing alot of research in the last couple days. The DEH-7900BT looks pretty sweet. But, my existing head unit sucks so bad, I'll take a 1900 right now...lol

What is everyones opinion on an Infinity Basslink? I know it's not the best solution, but I'm not exactly worried about aesthetics here. I just want simple, reliable, and reasonably decent sound. I figure this will do nicely to help fill in where the speakers can't.
