My 318is didn't come with the factory premium sound, however, there are tweeter wires in the car. I found the ends of the wires down my the stock mids (matched the colors), and tried to use them to wire up some aftermarket tweeters. I couldn't get them to work for some reason. Do they go through a harness or something? Any one else used the factory tweeter wires for their aftermarket audio set up?

Ken, those tweeter wires are there and I have never had an issue getting them to work.
I have had a hell of a time finding the right ones though...dig deeper in the harness that goes into the carpet. There is one wire tied up basically under the carpet.
GL!
Hey.. I am still gonna bring you a couple of sets of grilles if I get to come to PDX...I am just buried in the HUGE freeking home theater install. The drywallers started drywalling a week ahead of schedule.

Dude, seriously...go find an old installer (minimum 35) and buy a set of crossovers. Bring $25 in $5 bills...your shit will sound SO much better, and power handling will quadruple.
The BMW crossovers SUCK ASS!

tweeter wiring.
If you get the high end speakers the crossover is built into the woofer.
If not, you need a crossover, most tweeter kits come with a crossover.
You can just connect the tweeter wires or crossover to the front speaker wires. tweeters don't hardly consume any power.Comment

I did the same thing, my tweets didn't work at first. My 318is didn't come with the factory premium sound, however, there are tweeter wires in the car. If you take a closer look at the wire colors you will find that one of them is very close, but not the same.
Follow the main wiring loom down, just under the carpet (or around that area) and you will find another connector taped to it, this one should have the same color wire as the ones in the door where the tweets mount.
You don't need to run new wires just for the tweets.Comment

You do not need to use new wires if you're just installing a new head unit.
That would be a huge waste of time, plus you'd be adding uneeded weight.
I installed my headunit and front high-end speakers with tweets off of the stock wiring, it's very simple.Comment
