vdo oil pressure gauge

so need some help troubleshooting a vdo oil pressure/sender combo.

It is getting power just fine, but reads nearly all the way to the right, as soon as i turn the key (but not enough to start the engine, if i start the motor, the guage moves even further to the right. If i take the connector for the sender wire and ground it, the gauge goes back to the left just like if the power was off.

i am using a VDO dual oil pressure sensor, but I don't have two wires running off it, the stock sensor is in the stock spot, while im running this sensor off an oil filter sandwich.

is the fact im using a dual sender a problem? can i just ground out the second output?

Are you sure you are on the right output of the dual sender? One connection is for the stock gauge, the other is for the VDO aftermarket gauge.

I have connected it to both sides and get the same result.

you have it connected to the dummy light post - swap it to the other post, which is the pressure signal. the dummy light post is an on/off switch wich is why it goes all the way to the right when you turn it on. you only need to connect one. do not ground the other post. the only other variable is having the gauge itself hooked up wrong.

Did you use thread sealant on the sending unit?

Most say not to, as that is the primary ground.

Test the body of the sending unit for a good solid ground.

Also - VOD makes them in different "Ohm" ratings - you HAVE to match the gauge to the sender.

I bought it off pelican, whatever they had at the time as part of a much larger order but I dont recall them offering multiple types, probably shouldn't have assumed they would match.

i swapped posts, its on the one marked G. same result.

perhaps they just aren't matched? according to my order form, the oil pressure gauge's part number is VDO-350041 with a dual sender VDO-360023

That's a single station gauge sender with warning light connection...not sure if that matters. But it appears to be compatible with the gauge.

I chose not to deal with an electronic gauge due to problems I've heard with them and went with mechanical instead.

perhaps im just not getting a good ground as my oil filter sandwich is anodized, i will attach a wire to the sensor housing and ground it and see how it goes
