Early doors ('88 and before) are a bitch to fit, but I got a HUGE 6.5" (Polk MOMO separates) in a late model door, nice and high, too.Comment

Luke, any pictures/info about this? I'm just getting ready to start some improvements. Did you have to space the speakers out from the interior panel, or is there enough depth in the door? Any metal cutting?
Edit- I found this: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...ight=door+momo which makes it sound like a ton of work. would slimmer speakers make it a lot better, or is it just tight no matter what. And thinking about the door, the question isn't "any" metal cutting, it's "how much".
I'm looking for an Audiocontrol 4XS, if that gives you an idea of where I'd like to go with it.1973 BavariaComment

Getchaself a 6XS, so you have more room to grow and (IMO) the best sub level controller there is, period.Luke, any pictures/info about this? I'm just getting ready to start some improvements. The Polks were HUGE, like 3.5" mounting depth. I made a ring of 1/4" tempered hardboard, placed between the door panel and the metal skin of the door. Most 6.5" will fit fairly gracefully, but yes, there is some metal cutting involved.

Damn Luke. I take offense to your comments up above :). I did some poking around in my early doors before and yeah, it looked like more work than I was willing to do to get my 6.5" to fit in there. My soundstage sucks anyway because my mid to high end is gone in my left ear. Nothing sound right to me and it sucks.Comment

Luke do you know if 3x5's will fit in the whole where premium speakers go? Thinking of going smaller and maybe not having to cut anything if they will fit.

I 100% agree with 80% of what StereoInstaller said... my $0.02, rear fill for the vast majority of E30s, really doesn't matter. You'd be better served by going without rear speakers and put the extra $ into better front speakers.
If you really want rear speakers, just go with the stock size and be done with it... it really won't matter, if your car is apropriately tuned forward.Comment

in a recent issue of pbmw there is a whole article on the depth and size of hte mdf board they mfg to make 6x9 on the rear deck. it has pictures for every step. I think it was Feburary or march's issue.
* Just looked, its the feburary issue, pg 103 project bluebird.Comment
