I'm curious, has anyone managed to fit some small subs (8" i guess) in the rear deck lid of an E36, a la the e36 stealthbox? Might be a good way to get a little bass without a traditional box.

It can be done. However most people are unwilling to lose the springs that hold up their trunk in order to fit the speakers.
I for one think 8's built into a custom rear tray would be tight. of course there would be a mid woofers and tweets built in too.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast
