6.5's in door cards

While inside the car it feels really natural.

And a black housing with a black interior (like my car) it probably wouldn't be as noticeable.

From when you did your install, does there appear to be enough room to "sink" the speaker at all?

So is that the best place to install them? About 3" or so up from the pocket? Might be worth it to install the premium 5.25 in that location and amp them

Thanks for the compliment Luke. Your right I would consider this modding. It was a pretty involved project for a newb like me. The sound is worth the effort if you can afford the time required to fab them up.

There is room down lower too. I have a 4 incher in my door, and the 6.5 in the kicks. perhaps i'll move the 6.5 up as well. I am pretty sure you can easily fit both if property located.

Pics of the 4" in the door? What did you use for speaker covers?

I have the basic rear speaker grills that are not being used. I'm thinking I could use those on the door cards just above the pocket. Sure, they are black and my interior is tan but maybe in the future I'll be able to swap the interior to black.

It doesn't look like the door's inner metal covers a large area where you'd be able to screw the speaker in on all four corners. Did you all just connect it to the door card and through the metal wherever it would touch?
Is the preferred method to cover the whole inner skin with dynamat so it is one solid door chamber?

I'll have to get a pic I can't find one. I screwed the speaker into the door card only, no metal. My plan is too actually use the map pocket to make a sealed inclosure for the 4 inch speaker and place the 6.5 like the above picture. The 4 just isn't sounding quite right without an enclosure of some nature. 4's are CDT's. if this helps its right below that metal cross member in the door and a bit toward the rear. Pic to follow.

Well i am kind of up in the air now as the woffers are about 3/4" too deep to clear the window in the down position...I don't know whether to make pods in the map pockets or space the speaker with an mdf ring. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Perhaps some thin fiberboard some mdf and some cloth and make a whole custom panel for the door. If i get bored I'm thinking about really diving it to a door project.

I went the cheap and easy way - 6.5" pods off ebay that sit in the corner and are angled towards the centre of the car.
I had to remove the map pockets and trim the door pull/armrest.
They are screwed to the trim - using the original map pocket screws and large washers, the door trim has the speaker hole cut into it.
Then with the trim on the door they are bolted to the door, access through the speaker hole.
No cutting of metal and they clear the manual window winders.
They came in black vinyl which almost matched the black and grey door trims.

I had to port mine into the door with a hole so that they would sound better on the lower end frequencies. Also, What are you going to do about the door handle piece now that the pocket is removed? Can you smooth it out to make it look like its not missing something? Looks nice otherwise.

yes the door trim has been cut out behind the pod so it is open to the door cavity - also they are only 6.5" with crossover set about 150hz. The low end freqs are handled by the 12" sub in the ski port.

Yeah the door handle thing is a pain - i trimmed it back a bit so it is not as bad as it was but it really should be smoothed out a bit.

I'm sure you'll get that armrest to look right. OT That is one of the nicest engine bay setups for CAI I have ever seen. Very Clean.

I think it would look good to take that piece and mold it together with map pocket. It a lot of work to make anything sound and look good in an e30.
