    Finally, a functional bass machine.

    I've finally got my setup all installed and tuned/dialed in how I like it. Sounds awsome. For a single 10" sub the output is great.

    I fgot around to taking pictures, its no where near finished visually, but it is fully installed and completely functioning.

    I have a single JL Audio 10W3v2 in a custom made box. Here are the box specifications.

    (outside dimensions, 3/4in MDF)

    Height = 15 in
    Width = 28 in
    Depth1 = 7 in
    Depth2 = 12.75 in

    Gross box volume = 1.684 Ft³
    Speaker Displacement = 0.05 Ft³
    Net box volume = 1.64 Ft³
    Port Diameter = 3 in
    Port Length = 10.654 in
    Port Frequency = 30 Hz
    Port Area = 7.069 in^2
    Port Volume = 0.044 Ft³

    I have a JL Audio 250/1 powering the single 10W3v2. Low pass filter is set @ 85Hz, with a infrasonic filter cutting it off at 30Hz. Without the infrasonic filter you risk damage to the subwoofer with overextention below port tuning. The box is entirely isolated from the trunk space. The sub is sealed around the skihole opening with rubber weather stripping so 95% ofthe sound energy is directed into the cabin where it belongs! I have ZERO trunk rattles or vibrations outside the car, and there is no booming bass audible outside. It stays inside the car. Its wonderful because I can enjoy retarded amounts of boom inside, but you absolutely cannot hear me coming if my windows are up.

    The Kicker Ix252 amplifier is running my MBQuart midbass/tweeters in the cabin
    through the pictured MBQuart crossovers. This amp is a loner (a pretty good one at that) until I get my JL 300/4 to run the interior speakers. This amp is set highpass @ 110Hz.

    I still need to build the false panel to hide all the wires (carpeted to match the trunk) and I also need to build the new rear parcel shelf with a flush, flaired (much better looking) port opening.

    I should add the rear seat was only removed for the pictures. The sub does fire directly into the backseat, but it makes little if any difference.

    Cool, I'm not the only one who did some ICE this weekend. I built myself a new box as well (pictures coming soon)

    I have a couple questions. How do you have your box mounted to keep from sliding around? Or do you?

    Also, is there any difference to what way the subwoofer needs to be facing? I have my sub facing away from the driver.

    I love that as well. My friend and I tested in a parking lot last night with the bass on high and we stood not but 10 feet away from the car and really couldn't hear much. It's all stuck inside the car.

      What's the pipe coming up through the rear deck, a port?

      EDIT: Nevermind, skipped over the last sentence. "Poot opening." :rofl:

        We did some ice in my neck of the woods on friday. Installed Polk 6x9's in the rear deck, MTX 6.5 in the doors, and Pioneer 5.25's in the front kick panels, along with 2 MTX 12" subs. All of this is being powered by a MTX Blue Thunder amp with the music coming through a touch screen Panasonic head unit. I bet you're all thinking damn, that's a lot of bass. Well with the amount of sound all those speakers put out, it is all very balanced and sounds VERY good.

        Anyway, looks sweet Jordan, nice work.

          Look to the left and right of the sub. Those 2 lag bolts hold the box tight. They also compress 1inch of foam rubber into about 1/4in to seal the box against the firewall.

          The way I have it facing and sealed, no trunk rattles.

          If you fire it into the trunk, you will have tons of rattles, and your body panels will resonate to no end.

            Interesting design...

            That's awful weird. My trunk rattles a LOT less than it did when my sub was facing towards the cabin with the old box. However, yours fires directly into the cabin, so thats where the difference comes in.

              what happened to the midbass? :P
              It sounds fine how it is now? My 6.5's go down to about 80 hz atm... Alot of people say they'll extend down to 60 hz pretty well, but I would rather have the sub cover it. Just wondering how it sound between 85 and 110 hz :P

              Are jl's crossover slopes 12db or 24db?

                i was always under the impression that firing it away was louder because it used the whole vehicle to create the frequencies. I tried a few different directions for firing the sub, and it always sounded the best firing rearward. Of course, there were trunk rattles. As long as you have good sound deadening, though, it really isn't a huge deal because you can't hear the trunk from the cabin...unless you are wanting no rattles to be heard outside...but .thats just part of having high output subwoofers. but since he has removed all his sound deadening material i'd wager it would sound awful firing at the trunk.
                I retired my E30 for now...

                  The Kicker amp is rated 25RMSx2. It was a bit distorted with the crossover set at 70Hz at high volumes, so I bumped it up to 110Hz. Sounds alot better.

                  The JL 250/1 has a switchable crossover. Off-12dB-24dB

                    that amp looks like a lot more than a 50 watt. is that iasca rating or something?

                      Strange that both w3v2 owners on this board have them in the exact same spots.

                      I might switch to a ported box though. Just too lazy to build it right now.

                      Sold it.

                        Maybe I'm just an idiot, but how about the frequencies between 85 and 110Hz? Are you planning on adding mid-bass speakers?

                          I really like it it's very clean and I am sure sounds great! I would like to emulate your design but having a convertible and no rear deck how would you suggest I run the port? Use a longer pvc & run it under the back seat?

                          Also I only have 13 inches of clearance due to the top storage, can I make the box wider to compensate for the loss of the 2 inches?

                              Yeah, box dimentions don't really matter so long as the air space is proper for the sub, and there is enough clearance around the sub. Feed the port into the backseat as well.

                              On a convertable you dont have a ski hole, and you have a big defroster blower right there.
