    Amp getting overpowered?

    So i got a MRV-F450 amp

    this is my setup.

front - JL XR 5.25's with infinity refrence tweeters.
back - Infinity refrence 5.25's with JL XR tweeters (reason why i got the tweeters mixed is for better fitment)

trunk - I got the JL crossovers (with the JL 5.25's and infinity tweeters hooked up)
    - The infinity crossovers (with the JL tweeters and infinity 5.25's hooked up)
    - Alpine Type R 10" Sub

    - ALL POWERD by Alpine MRV-F450

Now to the problem: After i listen to my system for a little while, like always the amp get pretty warm and then when the volume is pretty high the amp phases out. The little green light on the amp turns red and music stops for like 5 seconds, and then it turns back to green and plays for a little bit and over and over again. It usually does this when the volume is pretty high, mostly happens with techno when the beat is fast and bass is strong. Also it usually happens after the amp gets a little hot.

Now should's an MRV-f450 be able to handle this kind of setup pretty well? Or is it really getting overpowered?

I got 12 gauge wires going to everything. And I got quality RCA's, and a 4 gauge amp wireing kit.

It's not being over-powered; it's being over driven. It can't dissipate the heat quickly enough to safely power the speakers. When the red light comes on and the music stops it's because the amp is over-heating and it needs to stop to cool down so that the circuitry doesn't fry. I hope you haven't been doing it a lot; you could ruin the amp. You NEED to find a cross-flow fan or perhaps a couple of smaller fans to cool the amp. I had to do the same thing with my PG M50.

Or you could just buy a better amp. Like Ken said though, your amp is going into thermal protection mode to protect itself from a ignorant user.

What orientation is the amp setup in? Where is the amp mounted?

I can drive my JL 250/1 at max volume for an hour and the heatsink is cool to the touch.

      Your amp does:

      Power Output
      RMS Power at 2 Ohms 40 W x 4 + 150 W x 1
      RMS Power at 4 Ohms 30 W x 4 + 150 W x 1

I really shouldn't be making that much heat unless you have it mounted in a way that defeats the heatsinks.

        Is it a 5-channel amp?

Type R subs are DVC, and I wonder how stout the sub channel of that amp is...

Good point. When low impedence circuits are established, the amp has to work much harder and thus produce more heat. You'd probably be fine if you got a fan or two.

Well you can call a few car audio shops and see if they have any cross-flow fans. Or you could go to Radio Shack and get a couple of fans that run on 12v DC. Just make them blow down the heatsink fins.

Ok well i went over to my local music store, and the guy check over there. And he said that i should have my ground grounded into like my trunk right underneath the carpet. Right now i have it grounded to that little flange sticking out where the trunk arm closes. I am pretty sure that is part of the chasis.

Is it possible that because of the ground not being correct it would overheat? He said something about it taking enought power and not being able to send it all out (because of a bad ground)

anyways, i will post pictures tomorrow.

Both my amps are grounded to the same spot as yours.

                        HOW IS YOUR AMP MOUNTED.

You seem to refuse to answer the important question here.

Doubtful. I'm guessing it's still the RCAs.

the amp is mounted to a piece of plywood wrapped in black vinyl, which then is mounted to the trunk floor in the left back area if you are looking into the trunk

the rca's making it overheat? Or are you confused with my other thread where i talk about the whining noise?
