Ask anyone who has heard my car...ported, done properly (as 99.9% of cars are NOT!) sounds clearer, more detailed, "faster" and has better impact by a HUGE factor.
E30s have serious bass anomalies. There is a big suckout right about 50Hz, then a rise below 100. This makes for some interesting issues in attempting to make the bass sound "clean", thus my attitude towards ported vs. sealed.

i don't blast my system so i'm really after a clean, tight bass.
luke, what dimensions would you recommend if you are to build a box for this sub? i assume it would be ported. thanks.
If I did my normal 12" ported box and you installed it properly you could make FUCKING THUNDER with like 150 watts. The quality of your amplifier will make a significant difference in quality of the sound, but good luck finding something above average! Think Zapco, ARC audio, Tru Technology...bring your wallet!
The good news is that "average" is pretty damn good, and these days, pretty cheap too. You can pick up an amp for $75 that will be incredibly clean and plenty powerful. Remember, most all amps today are either Taiwanese or Chinese...so they are the same product for the most part. Pop a cover off of 10 different amps with the same power rating, you will see 6 of them are the exact same circuit board, the exact same parts.
Seriously, though, those $100 amps sound terrific these days.
