    Surface mount front speakers

Is it worth my time to surface mount my front speakers on top of the plastic sail? I did this once before and i remember liking the outcome.. BTW speakers are cerwin vega 5 1/4 components.

I did it on my first e30 about 10 years ago and it made a very noticeable difference in sound. However, I do remember having to modify the hood release lever with some washers in order to clear the speaker grills.

yeah the hood release is your big hurdle. it wouldnt' be hard to move it further down into the foot well either. as long as its mounted to a solid surface it should be fine. I have my 6.5's done that way right now. I think with 5.25's that it would not be difficult at all.

Glove box is a biatch too. I'd use the stock locations. I Dynamatted (sp?) the HELL out of my kickpanels (read: inside, outside, everywhere I could get it), and it sounded MUCH better.

agree the glovebox sucks too. I always forget about that.

When I did Jimmys M3, I used a set of 6.5" grilles covered in grille cloth (just the mesh part) and cut the kickpanels very carefully, then glued the grilles in place.

thats about how mine are now. I've also seen people use the stock grill holder piece and fiberglass that into the stock panel. came out nice.

Titanium Power 6.5" components. Awesome sound, great power handling, nice fat midbass...for about $200/set.

That looks great Luke, how much do another set like that?

Did you Dynamat inside the "enclosure" behind the speaker as well and try to seal it off at all? I'm really disappointed with the midrange from 5.25" JL XR's in my car, definition is good, but punch isn't there at all. Even with the Zapco AG 360 pushing the woofer/tweeter as a pair on each side.

All the dynamat was already there from a previous install. I don't remember there being any inside though.
