What concert have you ever been to where the huge wall of speakers is behind you?[/quote]

well good point. but on the same principle what is the point of having massive speakers in the trunk? the previous owner was into sound competition and had two 15"s in the trunk and no room for anything else. the problem was he cut out two big FN holes in the sheet metal under the back dash cover and threw the cover away. so when i bought this it was either put this back in place or look at some f'd up sheet metal. this looks much better and i think sounds great. sure it's not subtle, but it doesn't look like a drunk redneck went after it with a sawzall either. i'll be making something a little different here soon anyway. just couldn't decide if i wanted to keep this or not. and outside opinions are always good to have

Outside opinion is to get a sub and get rid of all those 6x9's. Will sound better, and play deeper bass.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

The issue is like this: if you throw a pebbel into a puddle, you get concentric rings of ripples, right?

throw 2 pebbles into the same puddle, you get overlapping ripples, crashing into each other...the waves smashing into each other is basically a distortion of the waveform, thus shitty muddy sound.

Now imagine 2 different pebbles, one much larger...the waves would be larger and smaller and would be able to overlap each other without causing the crashing part...that is why multiple speakers in the same frequency band cause issues.

there are applications (see MTM designs for further discussion) wher the type of wave output is quite beneficial, but it is rare in cars.
