    1987 325i - non-electric top rattles when up

    Hi all,

My 1987 BMW has a metallic rattle (at any speed) when driving with the top up. It seems to be coming from the passenger (U.S. spec) side behind the rear seats. It disappears when the top in down. I have sat in the back seat with someone driving and could not locate the sound. I have tightened the bolt for the convertible catching mechanism which was loose but that did not solve it. Nothing that I can see or feel is loose. See video in link for audio. Does anyone have any suggestions based on the noise?

Is that a lotus white interior? Do you have an electric top with the lift mechanism attached?

if your top is manual or disconnected from the top motor, pull the front part of the top open to release the tension on the top, then get the rear part partially open. Shake the rear part up and down a bit to see if you can find the metal on metal sound.

Thank you. I am not sure of the official interior color name. It's more of a light tan. It's that non-electric top. I did what you said and no mechanical creeks or sounds. I appreciate the suggestion.
