are there specified mounting points on the roof to place the roof racks? I just installed my Yakima rack, and wanted to make sure there wasn't designated areas on the roof to install these. I kind of just placed them equi-distant from each other.

Yup no specific mounting areas on the E30s. Just be carefull about weight. Probabaly 250 lbs evenly distributed would be really pushing the gutters.
And to remind you guys if you need any parts or anything let me know I can either get them or have them.

For what it's worth, I've got a set of Sportrack roof racks that I've been using for years. I've got ski racks, bike racks, and a tote (or "my bubble") and they all go on securly and easily. However, it touches the paint and leaves a foot print sometimes.
I've also had a Yakima setup on my roof, and I would say it's much better for strapping heavier loads to the roof as it doesn't rest on the roof, rather just the rain gutters. Doesn't hurt the paint at all. Never had an issue with poor fitment with either.

i just picked up a nice thule rack with fairing from an e28 guy. none of the mounts were right, and the fairing is WAY too fat but with a little ingenuity i got it on snug without any major harm to paint/trim. trying to discover what model it is...i'd post pics but i think i left my phone at a bar and i'm trying to track it down...1989 325is / 2.7, 274 cam, e30 M3 5-lug
1989 LN106 Hilux / 3.0TD SFA
1974 2002tii / stock
2002 IS300 / 5spd LSD

an e28 should have identical mounts to the e30, as they both have raingutters.
If you can get me a picture I should be able to let you know exactly what they are.
and as far as the fairing goes I run one that is oversized for the car. It helps break up the noise over fitting the correct size.

Those would be 400XT towers which are not meant to fit either of those vehicles(the e28 or your e30) that is why it was such a weird fitment.
I would really be careful about putting too much weight on that rack, or carrying bikes or anything tall.
