I have a 92 325i convertible. One of the things I wanted to fix was the automatic convertible top.
It wasn't working when I bought it so I took it to the bimmer specialist and the part to begin looking at it with labor was going to cost about $300. The mechanic was nice and recommended that even if that was fixed, the motor could go out and that would be alot more money... possible more than the care was worth including labor.
I didn't want to deal with all the problems an automatic top may deal out in the future, so I decided o convert my automatic top to manual.
You will need to find some parts from the junkyard from another convertible:
-Manual tonneau release handle w/ housing (this is located in the driver side rear speaker cover)
-Driver side rear speaker cover
-Cable from the handle to the driver side tonneau latch
-Cable from the handle to the passenger side tonneau latch
-Tonneau latch
-The matching part on the tonneau cover that engages with the tonneau latch
Attached are some pics.
