I put together a DIY video for installing a chip in an E30, in this case, it was a 1991 318is and a MarkD chip.

I assume the install would be the same for a Dinan chip on an '88 M3?

Well it may not be literally the same, step by step, but it would be very similar. Unplug battery, open glove box, remove computer, open computer, remove chip, install new chip, put back together.

Does it need to be programmed? Well yes, that would be the point of installing a new chip into the car. It has revised engine mappings to increase power. Putting a blank chip in the car does nothing and will probably cause the car to not work.

This chip was from MarkD, he programs them and sends them to you for install into your car.
