    Instrument Cluster Turn Signal Repair

    Hi all,

I was running into an issue where the left turn signal light in the instrument cluster wasn't blinking. Fortunately, I found this resource: http://e30world.com/electrical/BMW-E...ioning-blinker and it turns out that I had the exact same issue with an open circuit.

The link has pretty much everything you need but I'll add a few photos to complement it.

    Overview:
    1. Remove instrument cluster (Note: It's unnecessary to remove the steering wheel)
    2. Disassemble the 9 or so larger phillips screws to separate the front clear plastic cover from the rest of the instrument panel
    3. Use an ohm-meter to locate test for a break in the turn signal light circuit. I like using the diode beep mode/function. It should be closed across the bulb and to the end of the copper paths.
    4. Visually trace the copper paths and look for breaks. I found mine at the same place as the e30world link and it was very hard to see. It's a tiny crack (<0.5mm wide).
    5. Scrape back some of the insulating material to reveal the copper wire below.
    6. Drop some solder on the copper to close to the circuit
    7. Stick a small piece of electrical tape (i used a 2mm square) over your soldered area to insulate it from possible short circuits
    8. Reassemble

All in all, it took me over an hour though most of the time was spent carefully getting the instrument cluster out.

Good luck and I hope this helps!
