    ebay chip...

    i have an 89 325is

so i bought and installed an ebay dinan copy chip. m20 173 ecu blah blah. ive done this before, but with a different chip. anyways, when i started up the car, it ran like it had an vacuum leak or aftermarket cams.. really rough... and i smelled a lot of fuel, as if running really rich. i only ran the car for a min or 2, up and down my driveway once. still ran like crap, so i put stock chip back in..

question is, do i need to adjust my afm for it to run right?

i was running 93 fuel.. maybe a tiny crack on my intake boot i noticed later, which i replaced already. no other vacuum leaks i can find right now.. so could it be the afm? a vacuum leak? possibly leaky/bad injectors? (bc of strong fuel smell) or maybe the ecu needed more time to adjust?

idk. what do you guys think?

I don't know if it explains your issue, but it definitely takes longer than 2 minutes for your ECU to adjust

It will do that for 20 minutes or so, then it will be fine, everytime you disconnect the battery it will have to adjust as well. Try to drive it around for a bit to let the ecu adjust.

What happened? I am considering one of those ebay chips too.
            I'm not a real car guy :(

I've got one for sale for cheap.

It works but I had a TMS JimC chip so I never used it (I also removed the JimC chip and have that for sale because premium gas has become too expensive in California)

                  HEY!

sorry took so long for an update...

soooo. chip runs really well. im happy

ran rough for a few min. idled funny, but nothing like the last time when i had a tear in the intake boot ( vacuum leak)...

now... more responsive, little more low end torque, feels good, runs smooth. i didnt even have to adjust my afm :)

to determine a vacuum leak, start the engine and while it's running, spray brake cleaner on where gaskets and hoses are located. if the idle changes, then you found where the vacuum leak is.

i bought an ebay chip as well. it actually made my car run better than the bmp chip i had. aside from the rev limiter eliminated, the throttle response is better and the acceleration definitely improved a lot on kick down (yeah i drive an automatic).

this is with 87 octane when i started. i had a full tank of gas and installed both chips on the ecu and compared. i get 29.7mpg highway @ 65mph 85% and 15% city.
I let Chevron rob me when I filled up with 91. Fuel efficiency decreased after.

                    The BMP chip averaged 28.4mpg
