I don't think the M20 sounds that great with no exhaust, actually almost annoying. The same can be said for the 4.0L I6 in my Jeep, I ran it with nothing after the cat when I was installing my Dynomax cat-back, it didn't really sound that good, just loud.
Now the 4.9L V8 in my '93 Cadillac Coupe DeVille - ran that with no cat, when we were replacing it.... that was quite epic. The 4.9 already has a rather raspy, rough sound (nice) and with open exhaust reminded me of a stock car.
And yes, it is defining loud when next to the exhaust, I don't think my Cannon digital camera has mic level adjustment. I wanted to do it at night to see the flames coming out of the manifolds but I -really- don't think the neighbors would like that.
Transmission is in gear (not sure which - shifter is out) and is supported only by a bottle jack.
VS:
Those last 3 videos were taken back in April (others were recent) In the last 3, the car still had the original cap and rotor that worn well worn down. I have since replaced them, but the car was already undergoing heavy maintenace. Even then, the engine sounded stronger, started faster and revved more freely. I still have new wires to install, as they are original too.~Rick | 1990 325iC ~Noelle - Her build/cleanup thread http://r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=179507
