Replacing cat with 2 small resonators?

my cat is rusted out & hole-y. it drives me crazy, the car is way too noisy for DD use, imo, especially around 2-2.5k rev range. i would like to keep a somewhat aggressive tone, but also keep it understated. i'm thinking i'm gonna replace the cat with 2 small resonators that will fit in the same space, and hopefully work with the headers i've got in the works as well. my current cat-back setup is the one that carr industries sells, fyi.

cliffs: does anyone know of some decent resonators that i can replace my cat with that'll fit in the same space, work with m20 headers, provide fairly drone-free driving, but still leave the exhaust note somewhat aggressive?

There are some nice high performance cats on ebay or wherever that you will be hpapy with. try to look for one of them. they will keep the noise down as well without harming anyones ecosystem :)

i'll look into the ebay stuff, but i'd like something at least vaguely quality in construction. i've done glasspacks before on other cars and they're usually too loud. this is my dd, so understated is the name of the game.

Even if I didnt have to do emissions (wait, I don't) I would still run a cat. The exhaust sound gets raspy without one and The bad smell is annoying.

Doesnt matter if you do or dont have to pass, running a vehicle on the street that came with a cat without one, is just dumb, and illegal in most places.

cats can actually act as a resonator box to "hide" the rest of the exhaust from the tuned header section, and is probably how the factory designed things - but don't worry, the 19 yo r3v engineer crowd has better ideas. ;)

I think the ultimate would be to find a stock cat from a late M5 or M3. OE BMW cats are so much better quality than aftermarket.

to reiterate, my cat has holes in it because it is rusted out, thereby negating any kind of positive effects the cat may have had on emissions previously, and i'm choosing to replace the cat with resonators because its my car and i can do whatever the fuck i care to with it. doing so, the car will be quieter, smell just about the same, and in all likely-hood run better than it does now since the exhaust gasses will be traveling the path they were intended to instead of leaking out the side of the cat.

the car is my dd, there is nothing "fah raze" about it, never said there was. if i decide to build a car for the track, i'll let you know first, internet thug. i don't care about any performance gains from running/not running a cat, the car is not fast, and it won't be without some serious engine work or a swap. i'm going for sound that matches with the drive-ability i'd like from a daily. the car does not have to pass emissions here, it is considered to be a vintage vehicle, so i am breaking NO laws. so, while it may well be illegal up in the granola-hippy land of the PNW, it is not for me. why don't you go buy a prius if you're so concerned about the environment, and stick some giant fucking vinyl stickers on it that say "i'm better than you", because there's nothing "fah raze" about huge vinyl decals, right? unless you have something useful to contribute, like an actual answer to the question i asked, go be a condescending prick somewhere else, fucking troll.

and for future reference, i'm 28. i've been turning wrenches on my own, & others cars for 13 years now, and i work as a mechanic professionally. my employer does more advocacy work for then environment than most, i can assure you of that. the "you kids deleting your cats" comments are a bit misplaced, son, but way to make assumptions. i'm older than the bulk of the r3v community, and more experienced as well.

actually, it's illegal to remove a cat from any car that came with one from the factory, regardless of your local emissions testing laws - it's a federal law. But it's not like they can stop you.

I had to pull the emissions sticker off my car (it's from california) because they can't modify the exhaust on california emissions cars. the stupid thing is I was still going to put in a cat.. lucky for me the sticker peeled off easy and the shop thought the cat was a muffler. lol

fair enough, so it's not exactly legal. if i can find a decent replacement cat at a reasonable price i'll consider it an option, but i'm still going to explore the resonator idea, kinda like this:

yeah, that guys exhaust looks like butt though. I'd just do dual pipes into a 2.5" or 3" single I/O muffler or metal core cat. Dual resonators is uneccesary.

i'm only thinking dual resonator b/c the cat back section is in good shape & relatively new, like 2 summers ago i installed it new. i have a set of headers that are going to go on at some point this summer, so it seems silly to run a dual-single-dual set-up, if you know what i mean?

not at all. there's no performance benefit for dual exhaust, and it already does dual-single-dual when it goes through the factory X-pipe.
