Someone has done it already and it was OK only because it was a drag/show car, otherwise rear exit.

Will be doing a side exit on my track rat, will probabley be going with a fuel cell so will have more mounting options one the OE tank is gone.

If you have an I and you want it to exit on the drivers side I think you would have to relocate the fuel filter.

Why would you want to do this? E30's aren't Roush Mustangs.

I have a side exit on my Integra and finally decided that the only way its going to look good is if you can't see the exhaust at all. So it ends infront of the right rear tire and you have to lay down to see it.
            Good luck.

i think you should only doing if you need the exhaust coming out quickly....ie:turbo with huge power and or drag car. other wise it's not needed.

One of the reasons people do this on a track car is to avoid the sound regulations that are in place.

Most tracks measure the sound on one side (the outside) so if your exhaust is on the inside you can get away with a louder exhaust.

My reasons for doing a side exit are: Less weight because of less piping having to be used, cheaper, always liked the look of a side exit exhaust, and it's annoying to have to remove the exhaust everytime the tranny or driveshaft has to be removed. I know a lot of people won't like it, but I'm not really concerned too much about others liking it. Just wondering if anyone had some ideas for hanging it?

bring it to an exhaust shop, tell them what you want. pay. it will be done well. no need to ask any questions. it will be cool, just tell a shop what you want, do it, post pictures.

i may sound like an idiot for asking, but i have seen it both ways...where would you locate the exhaust tips? i'm guessing thru a hole in the sideskirts but would you put the whole in the front or rear of the sideskirt? i've always wanted a side exit exhaust on an e30 but i don't know what would look better...front or back of sideskirt? hmmm o the possibilities :)

Good luck having it come out the front, it'll get crushed under your framerail the first time you go over a speedbump

Nooo. That's not what he's saying.

Since this is something that not many e30 guys do, and involves fabricating hangers and bending pipes, it involves a level of complexity that can result in a high frustration factor. Unless you are a competent welder and have metal cutting and bending tools or unlimited time to pfutz around, this is a job best left to someone who does it all the time.

The biggest problem with side exit is noises associated with pipes touching the body anywhere. You also have to allow for expansion with the mounting system or the welds won't hold. Also, having pipes so close to the ground on a lowered car risks crushed pipes.

I don't understand the rationale of "it takes too long to drop the exhaust so I'm going to spend lots of time and/or money to improve access to the driveline." With air tools, dropping the rear of the exhaust takes less than 10 minutes tops. Frankly, I don't disassemble the exhaust when working on the driveline. I just drop it down a few inches. Replaced diff and driveshaft in this manner!

I put side exit exhaust on my 02 for a little while and it had a couple problems. The first issue was every one that got out of the car got burned, all part of the 02 experience though. The biggest problem, like oldnslow said was that the exhuast hit the bottom of the car which made a horrable sound and was almost impossable to get ride of. Good luck though, if want a side exit exhaust go for it, you can always take it off.
