thats a load of crap...when my gasket blew on the bottom of the headers my m42 ran like crap...It couldn't idle right. The m42 seems to be VERY sensative about its backpressure....what have you been shoking?!?! it must have been some good stuff.

on a side note I am putting side exhaust on my car but ONLY b/c I am turboing it.

Oh, so it had to be backpressure related huh?....lol. Think scavenging....or do you know what that is? Does an exhaust work on "pulses"?
What produces more power? A motor that chokes on it's own exhaust gasses or a free flowing exhaust. Please do some research.

screw you man...it was fine before the gasket blew then when I put a new gasket in whammy it worked fine again...grow up little girl

and fyi i don't have a cat...i welded a pipe through it. Little pressure changes aren't going to matter much but a big one (ie like running only on headers) is going to screw up the car.

Again, does that mean it's back pressure related??? It must be because you want to be right. I didn't mention a cat at all.
            So quick to the insults.

Little pressure changes aren't going to matter much??? You just got done saying that motor is VERY back pressure sensitive. So which is it??

I'll give you a hint. You want as little back pressure as you can get.

If you still feel I'm wrong, could you explain why you want backpressure?

There is more information that I am leaving out as I am still learning about all this. Backpressure is there but it has to do with the power band, rpm's and gear ratios.

Please Explain, never heard of back pressure effecting gear ratios

Backpressure doesn't directly effect gear ratios. It does effect where the power and the ratios work and work best. I was reffering to the whole motor vs power vs gear ratios.

You can get exhaaust pipes that flatten out (like down to an inch) for side exit exhaust. If you can find them in the right size, you could make them or have a fab. shop build them for probably pretty cheap. Personally I think this would look great and concidered doing it to my e30 before it decided to be a POS and break every 3 days.

Also as far as the backpressure thing goes, the amount of backpressure needed for an engnine to run smoothly (especially at idle) depends more on cam specs, and breathing ability of the engine. This refers more to the scavenging effect. Also if you lose your gasket anywhere near your oxygen sensor, you are likely to have an engine that doesn't run well as it will destroy the consistency in temperature and gas flow that the oxygen sensor needs to operate correctly.
