I have 3" pipe, magnaflow cat and 14" magnaflow muffler which also drones terribly. Did the dynamax make a difference?

I just ordered Vibrant's ultra-quiet resonator which looks more like a mini muffler than a resonator so I am really hoping the drone dies and overall decibels are lowered. I will report back if there is a significant improvement.

i bet you your piping is the cause of the drone. ask me how i know. ;)

I've recently built an exhaust for an e30. and retained the muffler cat, etc. it's still pretty damn loud as before. but the sound is way cleaner now and the drone is gone. previously he had bunch of 'muffler shop' welds and pipes. sharp angles, pipe slips into pipes, crappy welds etc. i also changed it from 2 to 1 pretty much immediately and 2.5" all the back. avoid pressure building in certain sections, minimize/eliminate tubulance between tube/components connections, and uneven pressures seriously help A LOT!

My exhaust is actually cleanly constructed but if I did it over, I would have one pipe mandrel bended for less welds and smoother transitions. My worst angle is only 45 degrees though and zero clamps. The resonator is being welded up on Monday.

I recently picked up this set up

              IE shorties
              stock cat
              2.5 to a dual 3" vibrant muffler

honestly the sound is good its quite ballsy. but One thing I cannot stand is the drone, its really bad at low rpm -3000rpm.
I have full 2.5" piping and heard that might be a problem. I m going to purchase a vibrant ultra quiet resonator and hope that this does me of that dreadful drone.
anybody have any experiences with a similar setup

My old man's custom exhaust had a really bad drone around 2800rpms when he first had it made with two magnaflows. Swapped out the middle piece for a flowmaster hush power and that was the end of that. Didn't change the sound too much, but definitely killed the drone.

I just got my car back from the exhaust shop and am very pleased to report that the Vibrant ultra-quiet resonator effectively removed the drone entirely as well as reduced the overall DB levels by at least 25%. I'm not sure how it is possible but the car does not vibrate nearly as much at idle now either. I can now enjoy cruising at any speed and not be embarrassed for my passengers by idling them to death at stop lights.

The tone is not greatly effected other than all the high frequency rasp is gone which leaves behind more of a smooth rumble to enjoy.

So for the record, you CAN have a 3" magnaflow exhaust that doesn't require aspirin to drive, you just need a ultra-quiet resonator in the mid section. I cannot speak for the regular low profile resonators but my understanding is they would help eliminate rasp but not cure drone, especially if it is a shorty.

My setup is: s38b36 headers > Y > 3" MF cat > midpipe > 3" Vibrant UQ res > more mid pipe > 14" MF 3" in, dual 2.5" out, all stainless TIG welded.

Best $80 I've spent on my swap. Install was another $180 but if you can do it yourself more power to you... just less noise.

Crazy good deal for $2.5" here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vibrant-Ultr...84cbb1&vxp=mtr

Sound is vibration. Less sound = Less vibration

Good point. The resonator changed the resonance enough such that it wasn't tearing my car apart at idle, like the tacoma narrows bridge at a certain wind speed.

I had the Vibrant resonator installed this last weekend and will be driving it to work tomorrow. I'll report back on how it sounds!
