need quieter... add a 2nd muffler?

My m30 setup is 2.5" all the way back from the downpipes with a 100-cell Magnaflow cat, 16" glasspack and Vibrant muffler. I like the sound for the most part; nice and deep with some rasp as you push it at higher RPMs, but it's really damn loud. So loud that I don't enjoy driving it as much as I'd like to, and going in to parking garages makes me feel like a total douche because it sets off car alarms. I really want to quiet it down. I'm thinking something like this in place of the glasspack?

Free Shipping - MagnaFlow Performance Mufflers with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Mufflers at Summit Racing.

it looks similar to a glasspack, are "mufflers" and "glasspacks" inherently different designs? I just need to cut down on the dBs a bit.

I also have a Vibrant muffler, glasspack style bottle resonator and high flow cat....its too loud. I'm going to be adding in a second muffler, hopefully this weekend.

Sweet. Post up with how it sounds. If you like it I'll be swapping mine out next week for sure.

I was just perusing the Verocious Motorsport page and found these:

        and

Every Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator is constructed of 304 Stainless Steel for superior durability and polished for show quality looks. Vibrant resonators feature a "True Straight Through" perforated core, surrounded by premium multi-layer sound absorption materials to dampen noise levels without restricting exhaust flow. The Ultra Quiet Resonators feature a larger sound chamber, which provides better sound dampening than the standard bottle resonator, and eliminates the rifling noise common with 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines equipped with straight through performance exhaust systems.

I called them up and explained what I was looking for, what I wanted, etc. Their tech mentioned that they're essentially the exact same thing, same construction, etc. The muffler is simply bigger than the resonator and therefor absorbs more sound. I'll crawl under my car tomorrow, take some measurements and see how much room I've got.

If you want QUIET but a nice tone, get a stock muffler from a newer car. I'm running a hyundai genesis 2.5" resonator/muffler in my exhaust paired to a magnaflow muffler. It's dead quiet on idle but it sounds awesome opened up. Lots of turbo E30 guys who can't quiet down their cars use stock car mufflers.

When you are dealing with a straight thru muffler (glasspack) there is really only one thing that affect how much sound it reduces or absorbs. Volume (capacity) is what does the work on that style of muffler. If you can fit another muffler that is noticeably larger it will make a difference. If that is not quiet enough, you will need a baffled muffler of some sort.

My '89 325 has an aftermarket cat with no resonator and a stock rear muffler except i modified it to be straight through and glass packed. Essentially a large 2 in 2 out glasspack. With stock diameter perf tubes running straight through the muflfer it was as quiet as the original muffler!
I redid it with 2.5 in perf tubes through the muffler and now it makes a little sound, but very mellow and deeper at idle.

Ive got one Simons and one small Walker 2,5" mufflers on mine and think the sound is perfect. Not to loud but deep and sounds strong.

How'd the 2nd muffler turn out?

unfortunately haven't had a chance to do anything yet. I've been so busy with summer school and baby classes/nursery shopping etc with the pregnant wife.

my catalytic converter decided to puke its innards out after 600 some mile so now its even louder. UGH. I'm most likely going to throw a magnaflow muffler in its place. I had them put that section in as a bolt in section anyway so I guess I could unbolt it and take the section down to have a muffler welded in....hmmmm.

                          Sorry I don't have a better answer yet = (

I've got 3", high-flo cat, glass-pack resonator, and a Magnaflow muffler. It drones like a drunken Scotsman on the pipes. I bought a Dynamax 17963 muffler and will be having it installed later this week. I'll try to post my experience.
