Is stainless steel superior to the stock cast iron manifolds not only in its ability to flow better, but also (and correct me if I'm reading this incorrectly) because it keeps the heat in better and isn't as reactive (thermal expansion/contraction wise) as mild steel/cast iron? And due to this, adding wrap/jet hot would cause it to crack/break because of the extra heat being kept in? Would you recommend stainless headers (in my case an 1997 m52)? Thanks
Stainless steel is superior because of it's ability to handle prolonged and repeated exposure to high heat, as well as it doesn't oxidize nearly as quickly as mild steel.
I'm pretty sure that ceramic coatings and wraps won't cause any damage. From what I have gathered, header wraps will disintegrate and fail before a stainless steel exhaust manifold will fail. I'm not sure about a mild steel exhaust manifold though since it is not as good with high heat and oxidizes quicker.
Also remember, if you just drive your naturally aspirated car on city streets, or the highway, your exhaust manifold will likely not even get close to temperatures where anything will fail from the heat.
