I want this sound. Which muffler?

I'm currently running a 2.5" Flowmaster 40 muffler with cat / no resonator..
Don't get me wrong, it sounds great, but it was the previous owner's choice for his build, and now I'm looking for my own sound for my own build.

I'll be doing a 2.8 M20 (M52B28 crank, OEM pistons, eta rods, Schrick 284/272 cam, etc).. and hopefully, depending on what this all ends up costing, top it off with a set of RD equal-length headers.

I love the raspy, mechanical, non-resonated tone of a built straight-6, plus I really think it will fit my car's personality when it's done.

This Eagle Speedster sounds like it's running a glasspack of some kind, but there's a few different brands of glasspacks out there and they all have their own distinct sound. What muffler will get me a similar sound??

Well to start you're going to need a V12.

Also damn dude, I had the same exhaust you have for a while and it was god awful. Nice when you got on it, but reekris that drone was ungodly.

      that's a straight 6 dude.
DOHC 4.7 liter though, which is HUGE, but I know an M20 can definitely sound like a baby version of that..

By looking at these pictures, there doesn't seem to be much of any mufflers.

You are not wrong Alex, they came both ways 12cyl and 6 cyl.

A funny story from a friend who does british cars full time. A customer brought in a V12 E type that he had just purchased for Bob to check over even though it ran great. The car was in solid shape and did not need much however he found one ignition system was inoperative. The V12 engine is fired like 2 inline sixes and has two separate ignition systems, 1 for each bank of the engine so it ran perfectly smoothly as a 6 cyl.

He fixed the ignition and gave the car back without telling the customer. Needless to say, the customer was slightly surprised by the performance of his car running on all 12, quality laughs all all around on that one.

good lawd, I'll never get tired of looking at that thing..

and yes, you seem to be right, unless they're running some sort of baffle inside the pipes or something super low profile.. although it makes some of the most glorious noises I've ever heard, I find it a bit hard to believe a classy ride like that has no muffler at all..

nonetheless, I do like a raspy tone from a built straight 6.. what are my options out there?

                  found this the other day:

anybody around here know this guy or what type of glasspack that is?

It does sound Ansa-ish on the Eagle Speedster.

headers to a cat (if you want) then to a vibrant muffler at the rear. Vibrant mufflers are straight-through design and would probably sound very similar to the eagle speedster

Heres a video of said exhaust setup on an e36 -> http://vimeo.com/24205258

And heres another video of a similar exhaust on my car -> http://vimeo.com/45576257 (obd2 exhaust manifold to vibrant ultra quiet resonator to vibrant muffler at the rear) This sounds much quieter, almost oem sounding.

Obviously these both have m52 engines and will sound different than an m20 but they are close enough. Before my swap, I had an Ansa exhaust on my m20 and it did not sound anything like the Eagle speedster

Headers seemingly give lots of rasp. A magnaflow is a great option.. got my universal one for $65 shipped

comparison of my car and a buddy's eta .. e34 m50 and eta only revved to 4500.. the m50 has ALOT more rasp after that

that there is pretty damn close - great sound on both of those cars.. I'd imagine the M20 wouldn't sound too far off, except maybe a slightly deeper tone..
looks like vibrant is a contender for sure..

this is also another option.. magnaflow sounds great on just about anything.. and I agree on the headers adding to the sound - I slapped a set of hooker equal length headers on my old 5.0 fox body and it just sounded meaner, although not necessarily louder..
