    gutted cat sound poopy...??

Any one else gut their cat and now dont like it? it sounds hollow and rattley. I can imagine all the gases hittin that empty space and just bangin around. I gutted just the back portion a while ago and the rest a week two ago. Sound like a flowmaster is UNDER my car. TONS of noise under the car. the actual exhaust note is good but the noise is terrible...

Thinkin of cutting it apart again and lining it w some fiberglass mating and stainless mesh.

Any one have input? I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GUTTIN YOUR CAT! sound poopy! :(

Cut it out and get a "test pipe" welded in.

yeah, id like to keep the appearance of a stock cat. Plus the cat is goofy shape. Test pipe may be hard to fit. Hhmm.. I made a flange at the front of the cat to unbolt from the down pipes... may straight pipe it from there and see how its goes.. any one wanna cut the "flanges" that come off the resonator to the tail section for me? :) So much for stock lookin cat setup:)

Just throw a factory heatshield over straight pipes if you want to be sneaky

What's a cat cost these days, $150? If you can't afford that you shouldn't be looking to modify your car.

appreciate the kind words- read with sarcasm.

i started this thread as a "has anyone else done it and hated the sound?"
and "its a bad idea, dont do it."

wasnt lookin for financial advice on how to build my car nor some one else to tell me "you shouldnt have done it."

a gutted cat will result in a sharp drop in exhaust gas velocity and also temperature when the gasses expand into the larger void.

basically, a gutted cat is more of a "restriction" than a stock one. you shouldn't have screwed with it in the first place.

we did it to my friend's POS jetta about 10 years ago, but only because it was falling apart inside and quite literally he couldn't rev over 2000rpm because it was so clogged. sounded like ass and stock would have been better but oh well..

my stock E30 cat was still perfect inside at 235k, I just don't see the point in gutting it. I wish I could have an E30 cat with a single 3" inlet and outlet, instead of having the stupid Magnaflow POS I have now..
