Looking for nice sounding replacement muffler. I don't want to get a cat back, just a muffler. I don't want it too sound like s**t either. I was looking at Flowmasters as they sound pretty nice and are on the cheaper side but I'm open to others. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Well sound is subjective, so unless you want to throw cash at a wall and see what sticks, Id get a ride in a car with what you are thinking about getting and see for yourself.
I had a Dynomax on my 318, and it sounded awesome but droned.
If I could do it over again it would be stock exhaust with performance headers. Based purely on sound in this scenario.Back to my roots

Cat backs for M20's are cheap, as in not much more than what it will cost you to buy your muffler, go to a shop, and have it installed properly. Either one will get you to the same result, one is easier than the other
Either do it right or don't do it at all.Back to my roots

If you're thinking of a Flowmaster, look at Thrush welded muffler. IMO it's a better muffler and much easier on the wallet. I just picked up one for mine, but can't get it to the exhaust shop till next week.

Thanks! My buddy is a welder so I'm not concerned about that aspect. The mufflers seem to be from $80-$180 which is far less than even the cheapest cat back that would probably sound like poo. I LOVE the Stromung cat back but thats almost $700.sigpic2000 323ci

Sorry for thread jacking but I am also in same boat as op, I got an 87 325i and the entire exhaust is awesome but muffler is beat up, now I got a free magnaflow 14816 the other day and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.
Basically 2 options:
- Y-pipe after cat to 2.5" pipe all the way back to muffler
- Y-pipe right before oem muffler making twin 1.75" pipes into single inlet 2.5"
Just curious what everyone thinks is the best option, drone and loudness don't bother me just looking for the optimal solution is while trying to be cheap lolComment
