    My little DIY exhaust adventure

Couple years ago, I ditched my stock muffler as it had broken off. I replaced it with this no name tubular muffler for cheap. At New Years, the original middle resonator rotted, and I replaced it with an elbow, and keeping the muffler. It lasted until this year... rotting out and I'd backed too far into a snow bank, causing it to be all loose, but functional.

Last week, I was able to pull it right off the end of the pipe, and I replaced it with a 2 foot length of exhaust pipe and clamped her on, thinking that the straight pipe might be decent. (cost - $40 CDN at Canadian (aka Crappy) Tire.

I found just the piece of pipe in place of the rear muffler to be a tad too blatty for my taste and I don't want to be THAT guy with the annoying sounding exhaust. Went back to Canadian Tire to see if there was any off the shelf ideas... I hate online buying etc.

I decided to go with a Thrush Glasspack muffer. Nice little red unit, about 3.5 inches around in the muffler portion with 2.25" inlet/outlet. Would have gone stainless, but wanted to get it done and not have to wait. All I used were a couple of adapters and a U-clamp on top of the hanger kit, so I could reuse my chrome tip and be able to clamp it to the end of the exhaust pipe without damaging the muffler itself.

Clamped it on, set up the hanger kit, and am quite happy with the results. She's got a good, non blatty sound and it's a definite improvement. Pretty decent for a $120-ish DIY project. I'll grab some pics later.

Actually, not loud at all - by my estimation. I like the sound now. I'll try to take a video and post.

The straight pipe was bad. Had a big blatty sound above 2K and just sounded awful. I found the engine was a little robbed of power too.

        Different story now.

i have a gutted cat and the thrush glass pack like this after my own adventure with the straight pipe. its not bad really. fairly mellow under light throttle and a nice bit of noise when your foot is in it. i just wanted something to baby it along until my 24v swap.

My car is set up with stock manifolds to H-pipe to Y-pipe then single piped all the way back to a basically glorified 1 in 2 out Y-pipe/glasspack. To me, it has a great idle sound, is really bassy and gurgly up to around 2 grand, has a bit of a blatty buzz around 2100-2200, but after that its pretty tame until about 3500-4 grand. Above 4 grand it progressively starts an aggressive bellow.

1987 325is. It is an auto right now, so ill be able to avoid the drone more easily once its swapped.

                  BTW - I used the 24069 Thrush Glasspack with the 2.25" inlet/outlet.
