IMO single exhaust has more performance potential but a dual system sounds better, but as always its in the details

I like the sound of a single exhaust with a dual outlet muffler. 2.5" is probably the right size for a single exhaust on a standard, or mildy modified M20.

I'd go with a dual setup, as that's what your iS would have come with from the factory. Plus it'll be better for sound, since an m20 gains no power from different setups. Besides, who wants to look at one lonely pipe up under their car?

That's just not true. Check out Digger's exhaust thread. Even a stock M20 could gain, or lose power/torque with different set ups. At least change the size and shape of the curve.

BMW took more into account than performance when designing the exhaust on these cars. Keeping it quiet for road use and emissions compliance were high priorities.

Plus one pipe means less weight.

I was thinking about 2 options to go with but haven decided which would be better:

            1. Stock headers to a Y pipe 2.5" tube, vibrant ultra quiet #1141 to a single to dual 2.5" magnaflow muffler.

            2. Is basically duplicate the stock exhaust in 2" piping X pipe, AERO Turbine AR20 resonators to dual in/out magnaflow muffler.

Suggestions/recommendations are welcome. Still want to have that classy twin exhaust tip look.

              .

Totally true - I tried running my single pipe Eta with a straight pipe from the cat back... sounded like crap and it was definitely a negative on power. I added a Thrush glasspack muffler, and it made all the difference. Drives and sounds much better. I'm happy with my set up - and that's a 2" OD pipe - what it came with from the factory.
