Maybe I'll lay down a MIG weld and a TIG weld on the same piece of sheet metal and look at the heat each leaves in the metal.
No worries, I should have made it clearer earlier that its not my opinion, just someones i respect. I can only MIG, haven't used TIG yet.

Try MIG and TIG experiment with different metals, esp SS and alloy, just weld up a T piece or something like that and also check which has worse distortion.

Re above comments about TIG, I'm well aware that you have heat control and can put it where you want it. Also, the term ;general area; was probably the wrong one to use, I meant instead of arcing through the wire you have to heat the area before you can weld. again, thats all I've been told so can't really discuss it any more.

Shouldn't matter, you can TIG any metal and also MIG alloy.

MIG is the best compromise of cost and quality, but gas welding will also work fine for less money. I've put together a few exhaust systems, including a set of headers, with only a cheap gas setup. MIG is definitely faster and easier, though.

You don't have to heat a general area with TIG, that's dead fucking wrong. Maybe he's thinking of gas welding.
exactly!!!! think of TIG as oxy/acetaline , but with way more heat control!
basically, if you can get your gas welding down then TIG is your next step/progression up in skill, and TIG will come a lot easier.
